The City of Barron's downtown area, offers a rich, traditional, and historical perspective to the visitor. In 1860, John Quaderer came from the Stout Lumber Company to what is now the city of Barron.

In 1860, John Quaderer came from the Stout Lumber Company to what is now the City of Barron. The land was a vast wilderness of giant white pine and hardwood forests, with beautiful lakes that provided excellent fishing and forest lands that offered excellent hunting. Mr. Quaderer built a logging camp on the south bank of what was then known as Quaderer’s Creek. He built a small store for his employees and in 1874 he built a hotel and he acquired much land along the Yellow River. In 1876, he gave the block now called “Court House Square” where a Courthouse would be built. In 1887, the City of Barron was incorporated.

Over the next 21 years, the city established its first fire department, newspaper (The Barron News shield, still in operation today), the first telephone company, public library, a schoolhouse and a Cooperative Creamery. In 1922, Barron’s largest industry was stated by 13-year old Wallace Jerome when he placed 14 turkey eggs under two of his parent’s chicken hens. The boy’s idea grew into what is now the Jennie-O Turkey Store, still the largest employer in the city, with 1200 employees.

The City of Barron, through the love and labor of those who settled the city long ago and the residents who over the years continued their tradition, has grown into a community that is safe, fun, affordable and has the edge of excellence.
